See things differently

Leading an organisation in the current business environment is enormously challenging. It requires senior executives and directors to possess both first- class skills and knowledge and the personal qualities they need to become top leaders. Studying the principles of leadership is not enough - delegates also need to practise them. The Cass MSc in Leadership enables them to do just that. Download the MSc in Leadership brochure.

A unique offering

"It combines rigorous academic study with intensive leadership training. Managers won't just study leadership, they will practice it."

Professor Colin Carnall, Director of Cass Executive Education

This is a leadership Masters degree unlike any other. Combining the experience and talents of Cass Business School with the Inspirational Development Group, an award winning performance management consultancy, this Masters offers a unique combination of academic and experiential learning.

As a delegate on the MSc in Leadership, you will explore your personal development as a leader over two years of part-time study:

  • Through extensive coaching, mentoring and assessment, you will learn, explore and perfect your own leadership style.
  • You will hone your core leadership skills in motivating and team-building, communicating and influencing, problem solving and decision-making, leading and managing change.
  • Through the core curriculum, you will gain a boardroom perspective on topics such as people management, business development, financial management, strategic communications and operations.
  • The practical elements of this Masters degree will put you through your paces and expose you to the real business challenges you will face as a future leader. Key features include the action learning project, where you will work in teams on a sector-based leadership initiative and the dissertation, where you work on a major leadership project within your organisation or sector.

With much of the MSc in Leadership taught in the inspiring surroundings of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, a place that is synonymous with leadership, this degree is for those leaders who will make it to the very pinnacle of their organisations.

The content

The Cass MSc in Leadership is a 24-month Masters degree, comprising a series of residential workshops covering four modules:

  • The Challenge of Senior Leadership looks at how individual delegates can develop into effective, modern corporate business leaders
  • Leading People provides delegates with the skills and knowledge they need to manage their staff effectively, by providing a sound understanding of first principles
  • Sustaining and Growing the Business will increase delegates' economic, business and sector knowledge in order to understand how business priorities create leadership priorities
  • Leading Strategic Change challenges delegates to conceive and implement change across all the key functions of their business.

Programme delivery

A unique feature of the MSc in Leadership is the relationship we have with the organisations which sponsor our delegates. The success of a professional and personal development programme at this level depends on us working collaboratively to identify the individual needs of the participants on the course, together with the wider leadership requirements of the organisations they work for.

We work with our sponsors to:

  • Help their talent management team identify, sift and prepare delegates for the programme
  • Ensure that reporting on each delegate's progress is tied into the sponsor's internal talent management systems
  • Identify and prepare senior individuals in the sponsor's business who will act as mentors to their delegates on the programme.

Candidate profile

This is an executive leadership Masters for managers with the potential to take up senior business leadership roles within five years.

Delegates will be of high academic calibre, demonstrated by a good university degree and have a minimum of five years' work experience. At least three of these years should be in a management role with responsibility for people and results.

Most candidates will be working in a significant private sector business or hold a significant management role in the public sector and will have been identified as having the potential to be promoted to a senior level. If candidates do not meet these criteria, their sponsor should speak to the admissions officer.

If English is not the delegate's first language, they will need a minimum, well-balanced IELTS score of 7.0. This may be waived if they have worked or studied in an English-speaking country for at least a year.

At least two supporting references (ideally one from a current employer or university tutor) are required.

All candidates must attend an interview. Download the MSc in Leadership FAQs.
